Wheelchair access desk

This custom wheelchair access desk has just been delivered for use in a public space in Collingwood, Ontario. Designed specifically to provide wheelchair-bound tourists with a suitable place to review maps and brochures, it is solidly constructed from 2″ thick ash. The “U” table design maximizes usable space while minimizing the desk’s overall size. The mitred desk corners are attractive but not the strongest possible joint, so to ensure that the joinery never fails the corners  have been reinforced with hefty custom inside corner brackets and a 4″ apron at the back.

Measuring just 39″L x 26″W x 32″H, the desk nevertheless weighs in at about 120lbs (55kg), reducing the chance that it will ever move while in use. It is equipped with adjustable feet levelers.

The desk was finished with a wood dye and stain combination, then top coated with varnish.
