This beautiful custom Windsor bench has just been completed. Based on the sack back chair with a shield seat, the turnings were simplified and the hand shaped riven back spindles do not posses the usual flare just beneath the rail. With a high back, it is 67″ overall in length, 42″ high, and has a seat of exactly 60″ long. The finish is a traditional rubbed black milk paint sealed with tung oil.
With a pine seat, sugar maple legs, and riven ash seat spindles, is piece sturdy but has a delicate appearance. It was fashioned using traditional 18th century techniques. All through tenons are wedged, locking the spindles into place. That works out to about 64 wedged tenons!
