I have recently completed this live edge table using stained book match ash slabs. Measuring 72″ long x approximately 40″ wide (varies from 40-41 1/2″), it is supported by a mat black custom welded steel base. Unlike some mass produced steel legs, this base has been designed to provide additional bracing of the legs. Set 3″ back from the side edges and 7″ from the ends, this steel frame provides the same function as traditional wood table aprons, preventing the legs from twisting out of position over time. To stop the legs from marring the wood floor, the legs have adjustable feet. A matching 48″ x 16″W x 17.5″H ash bench was also constructed, although not with a live edge slab. This bench can slide under one side of the table when not required. To provide additional character much of the worm tracks on the live edge was retained. Both pieces were finished with several coats of varnish to provide maximum protection to the wood.
The Art of Colour Matching
Colour matching takes patience I was asked to build a Stickley-style (mission) white oak bench, but then approximate the colour of that bench to an
