Contemporary oak nightstand

Contemporary Look, Traditional Methods

This clean contemporary design is not new. What is a little different is that this particular piece is made entirely of solid wood and with the kinds of traditional joinery one would expect to find in older quality furniture.

The drawers are made with dovetailed birch and 1/2″ maple veneer core plywood bottom, the back is ship lapped maple, and the base is a stand-alone part, fashioned from mortised and tenoned parts and then attached to the bottom of the nightstand.

The only concession to modernity are the sleek steel handles and soft close drawer glides.

The piece was stained dark grey but, on red oak, the result is a dark brown. A truer grey could be obtained applying a wood dye before staining.
