I have about one day’s work left with this pine chest of drawers. Designed to fit a somewhat limited space, it measures 72″ tall, 35″ wide, and 19 1/2″ deep. The main carcass, excluding mouldings, is 17″ deep. With progressively shallower drawers and two shelves behind the upper doors, this chest will maximize storage. The overall design and feel of the piece, to include the columns and turned feet, were made to replicate the features of a pre-existing piece within the house.
While the client has yet to settle upon the hardware, it will be finished with a good coat of tinted furniture wax. Unlike varnish and lacquer finishes commonly used for production furniture, wax will give a warm feel and texture, and unlike solvent-based finishes, the wax will not turn the clear white pine a dirty brownish yellow over time. Rather, a softer, warmer patina will emerge. It requires periodic re-application, but that only enhances the rich patina over the years.
